    About Moustafa

Moustafa received his B.S.c in pharmaceutical sciences from Mansoura University, Egypt in 2011. During his undergraduate studies he participated in a research internship at Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focused on applications of ruthenium complexes as electrochemiluminescence reagents. Also as an undergraduate student, Moustafa actively investigated three dimensional structure of actinoporin sticholysin I in his research internship at Complutense University of Madrid.

Moustafa pursued a Master's degree in medicinal chemistry in a joint program between Georgia State University and Mansoura University. At Binghe Wang's lab in GSU, he designed small molecules as potential anticancer therapeutics through EGFR kinase inhibition. His research was recognized by a research symposium award from Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and an invited talk at the Young Members Symposium of RSC in 2014.

In 2019, Moustafa earned his PhD in chemistry from University of Iowa under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Pigge. His multidisciplinary research focused on early diagnosis through development of fluorescent probes for biomarkers of diseases. His research was recognized by Lynn Anderson Research Excellence Award from University of Iowa in 2018. He also received travel awards from ACS organic and inorganic divisions to present his PhD research in 2018 and 2019, respectively

Moustafa's ultimate goal is to establish a research program focusing on questions at the interface of chemistry and biology. Interdisciplinary research in this area focuses on using tools of chemistry to address questions in biology and vice versa. Instead, his research plan is to develop new experimental approaches for these questions. His long-term career goal is to establish close ties between his academic research and industry that would eventually be translated into public benefit.
